I actually started this as an edit to Codex, but then decided to keep it as a separate page to keep the Codex page concise, figuring someone might find that useful. I have no problem with merging them if enough people think it's a good idea. BuddyPharaoh 14:17, 8 July 2008 (UTC)BuddyPharaoh

Fair enough. We could list this as a Codex Entry Guide, actually - I'd certainly say it qualifies as a guide - and keep the link on Codex. --Tullis 14:36, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Mikhailovich and Carriers

I'm having the worst time trying to get the conversation with Rear Admiral Mikhailovich to turn to carriers, and get that codex entry. I'm guessing it's behind that one intimidation response that I can't use yet. Time to level up some more. ...It's too bad there's no achievement for getting ALL the codex entries. BuddyPharaoh 14:45, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I seem to remember it's the "Do you read history?" response that gives you the entry, if that helps at all. --Tullis 15:30, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
You can also get this codex entry from the conversation with Khalisa al-Jilani, or by using one of the tracking consoles in the Citadel space traffic control facility (the big room upstairs from C-Sec). Stormwaltz 16:37, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Maybe you could compare this guide to that one on gamefaqs(http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/file/930279/50930), because here are some missing entries.

Completed

The list is definitely completed, although the Mass Effect 2 entries (Organizations) should be deleted, because you can not aquiere them in Mass Effect 1. It's just confusing as it is now.

There are two types of missable entries here:

  1. Asari: Government
  2. Turians: Culture
  3. Turians: Military Doctrine
  4. Human Diplomatic Relations
  5. Starships: Carriers
  6. Biotics: Life as a Biotic
  1. Asari: Biology (you must pursue a relationship with Liara to get this one)
  2. Salarians: Culture (Decryption is needed)
  3. Turians: Religion (if Garrus didn't kill Saleon himself, I didn't get this entry after the mission).
  4. Quarians: Law and Defense and Quarians: Religion (you won't get this entries if you completed Tali's pilgrimage to early)

The entries Space Combat: Trans-Relay Assaults and Weapons: Javelin should be unlocked after speaking to Vigil, but I can not confirm this until today. But if the official guide says so[1], there is definitely some truth behind that.

Also, most of the entries, you could get in Mass Effect 1 are unlocked in Mass Effect 2 from the beginning. Space Combat: Trans-Relay Assaults is known to Shepard, so there should be an opportunity to get it in Mass Effect 1, Weapons: Javelin on the other side must be gained (again?) in Mass Effect 2.

ShardofTruth 11:27, February 20, 2010 (UTC)

Good analysis. I'd like to see some way of presenting the Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 codices separately, without intermixing so that it's clear what the state of the codex is in each episode. Alternatively, something along the lines of the icon scheme you suggested elsewhere might be adequate. --DRY 16:50, February 20, 2010 (UTC)

6 times finished ME1 and never had these entries: Space Combat: Trans-Relay Assaults and Weapons: Javelin. I see i'm not the only one. Speak to the Prothean VI Vigil on Ilos. doesnt work. Never got any codex entries from Vigil. Perj 11:02, May 31, 2010 (UTC)

Maybe they're bugged, I never got an official answer to that question on the Bioware forums. --ShardofTruth 12:36, May 31, 2010 (UTC)

Having trouble with some of entries:

  1. Asari: Biology - must follow a relationship with Liara.
  2. Space Combat: Planetary Assaults - must follow a relationship with Ashley, or ask about her family as a male Shepard. Otherwise she cuts you short when talking and you don't get the Codex entry.
  3. Space Combat: Trans-Relay Assaults - 16 playthroughs later, I only got this entry once. And it wasn't from Vigil. I wish I knew where it was.
  4. Starships: Carriers - needs rather high Intimidate. Definitely not available for a new character, since the Admiral imposes his presence right after the first main mission (which usually is Therum, then back to the Citadel)
  5. Weapons: Javelin - after all the talk on this page, pretty safe to say this doesn't actually exist in ME1, or it doesn't trigger properly.
  6. Biotics: Life as a Biotic - must follow a relationship with Kaidan, or ask about his past as a female Shepard. Otherwise he cuts you short when talking (Anyway, this is all in the past and I've dealt with it) and you don't get the Codex entry.

Also, a short suggestion. Split it into two tables, one for Mass Effect and the other for Mass Effect 2. ME2 entries don't have such a page. I would do it myself, but I'm not fond of working on it and then seeing it undone. Perj 11:14, September 28, 2010 (UTC)

You can still get the "Biotics: Life as a Biotic" codex entry even if your character is male. You just need to follow a specific choices (ask about upgrading to L3, bad teacher and military training). 83.5.88.57 21:12, June 20, 2015 (UTC)

Move

This article really needs a new name. The current name makes little to no sense. The name "Codex Entry Guide" was suggested by Tullis before so that seems reasonable but any other suggestions would be appreciated.Bastian964 16:44, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

I agree. The article's name is misleading and Codex Entry Guide would make more sence. If we move it to that title, then we'd could modify the ME guide tempalte as this would be a guide to getting an achievement. Lancer1289 16:49, June 17, 2010 (UTC)
I support this. Move it to "Codex Entry Guide". If no one minds, I'll go ahead and change the move template on this article to show that title. -- Commdor (Talk) 17:38, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Move Complete, I also added this to the Completion section of the {{QuickNavMEGuides}} template. I thought it was appropiate. Lancer1289 18:21, June 24, 2010 (UTC)

Codex Update:

So I've managed to get Turians: Religion just by keep talking to Garrus and pushing him towards a paragon path, but not doing his personal mission yet. It would be great if someone else confirmed this and if a Renegade path also works. Then it should be added to this page as an alternate path.

~ Codex Junkie

The entry unlocks after his final conversation (the one where he thanks you), but only if you pushed him toward a Paragon or Renegade path. If you were not consistent enough with Paragon/Renegade options when talking to him, instead of talking about what you taught him, he will just say something like "I, uh ... thanks, Commander", and the entry will not be obtained.

Corrections (Mass Effect)

I have been verifying the acquisition of Codex entries on two different versions of the game (PC and PS3). Findings so far:

The option to obtain Spectres from Chakwas should probably stay, even if the player can't not pick it up as soon as they proceed in the game? Elseweyr [ talk | stalk ] March 3, 2014, 12:50:04 (UTC)

trans-relay assaults and javelin entries

so it appears these two entries can be found within the game files, have been added to the ME codex by stormwaltz himself, and according to the prima guide can be acquired by speaking with vigil, but there are at least three people now (including me) reporting that they MAY NOT be obtainable in-game.

it seems they can be obtained, but the specifics are currently elusive. shardoftruth and perj (the first guy to report this issue) got them eventually, but preliminary dialogue-testing on my end yielded no results (PC). so here's the record for anyone else willing to look more into this. Reopening this discussion -- more information provided by a recent editor: https://fextralife.com/forums/t246352/space-combat-transrelay-assaults-and-weapons-javelincodex-entries?p=6420583#p6420583 also, does this apply to be both LE and OT versions? Neo89515 (talk) 09:18, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
Looking into this (and will look into it more as it's related to cut content); I believe the Fextralife comment is correct. The only instance of these two Codex entries unlocking is indeed within the dialogue mentioned before, not Vigil, but the one with the two asari on board the Destiny Ascension during the battle or whoever they are. However, that specific conversation does not play in-game, not as such at least. Some of the voicelines of that conversation are heard, but not as part of a "regular" scripted conversation, but a full cutscene, which is scripted differently. Since the entries are supposed to be unlocked as part of the (unused) regular scripted conversation, they're never unlocked. This is for unmodded Legendary Edition by the way, and the tool clearly shows that those entries definitely cannot be unlocked any other way, and certainly not through Vigil.--Loadingue (talk) 11:37, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
Maybe they can't be unlocked in Legendary -- but what about older versions of the game? Consoles for the OT? Those avenues need to be explored, or at the very least, can't be discounted until they are investigated by someone. Neo89515 (talk) 19:26, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
A reliable contact (and former editor on here) told me that he confirmed that the console versions of ME1 are identical with the PC version, at the very least as far as dialogues go. In light of this, I would still recommend that we discard completely the mention that these entries can be obtained in any way, and maybe add a Trivia or footnote mentioning what the Prima guide falsely claimed.--Loadingue (talk) 11:52, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
... Who? Do they want to remain anonymous or something? And no, sorry, I don't agree. I'd want to know how this person confirmed that; can't they come here themselves and discuss? Sorry, you may find this unsatisfying to you personally, but I'm not willing to go further than saying "there are conflicting reports". Prima Guide and a developer can certainly be mistaken, but so could your "reliable contact". We can't say 100% that either claim is wrong. Best we can do is warn people, direct them here, and they can make up their own minds based on available evidence. For what it's worth, I tend to agree that most likely these can't be unlocked, but multiple users claimed they were able to, so I can't just dismiss that. We can't cherrypick what we want to consider reliable and what isn't to serve our own preferences. Neo89515 (talk) 21:00, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
My contact deleted his Fandom account after he grew frustrated with admin behavior here, so he won't be discussing it directly. He checked the decompiled files of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of ME1. While I agree that we shouldn't dismiss conflicting reports, we should at least word the "note" to mention that the claim about Vigil has gone unproven in recent years.--Loadingue (talk) 23:07, 4 August 2025 (UTC)

Regarding these elusive entries, I support adding in a note on the page linking to this discussion just to help prevent people going on a wild goose-chase trying to unlock the entries in game, but we can't state definitively that they can't be found, only that it's unclear. Neo89515 (talk) 19:06, 3 August 2025 (UTC)

Agreed. In any case, I don't think we've got any confirmation, if these entries are in the game at all, that the Vigil conversation is what unlocks them.--Loadingue (talk) 19:09, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
Fine with that approach as well. Elseweyr (talk) 12:59, 8 August 2025 (UTC)

Tutorials/Demonstrations and the Manual?

Is the "Manual" from ME3 recorded anywhere? The one you can read from the main game menu start screen on launching ME3 by clicking on "Extras"? What about the various Tutorial vids you can watch from the Private Terminal in ME2 and ME3? Are those even mentioned anywhere in passing? Just something I've been curious about for a while.
